Desert biomes are found near the equator on both northern and southern hemispheres. They are hot and dry regions, they receive less than 10 inches of rain per year. Almost one quarter of earth is covered by desert. Although the day time temperature can be very hot, the night time temperature gets very cold. Dust storm occurs when the wind picks up dust from the surface. These stormes can be 1 mile high and travel hundreds of miles.

The desert contains plants and animals that have to survive with little water. The plants do not grow very tall so most of the animals are small like rodents, reptiles, and birds. These animals can escape the burning sun by hiding under rocks or shrubs. Many desert animals tend to be nocturnal, sleeping during the day and coming out at night when the temperature is more tolerable. Since there is hardly any standing water in the desert, animals either store water in their bodies or get it when eating their food. The plants that are able to grow in the desert store water in their stem. They normally grow spaced out so that their roots can extend to find water.
