Temperate rainforest are divided into three layers, the canopy, the understory, and the forest floor. The highest layer is the canopy. This layer is characterize by huge trees growing hundreds of feet. The understory lies beneath the canopy. It is shaded by huge trees, so plants that grow here have to be able to survive with little sunlight. The forest floor is the lowest layer of the temperate forest. It is characterized by mosses, algae, mushrooms, and small plants. Animals living in temperate forests must be adapted to cold winters. Common species found in temperate forests are, red fox, hawks, woodpecker and cardinals.
